Why does AI recommend different HVAC companies for different questions?
Direct answer
Because ChatGPT and Gemini look for a source that matches the exact question. "Best AC repair" sends them to directories and review lists, while "emergency AC repair open now" or "affordable AC installation" sends them to companies' own pages for that service. A company can be named first for one question and not at all for another, so you need a page for each question your customers ask.
What we saw in Austin
On Oct 30, 2026 we asked ChatGPT and Gemini 4 Austin AC questions, 3 times each, logged out:
- "Best AC repair company in Austin TX": ChatGPT cited directories, with Contractors Ranked and Expertise each in 2 of 3 answers. Gemini cited a "best-rated HVAC companies" list article in all 3.
- "Emergency AC repair Austin TX open now": both tools cited companies' own sites. Gemini cited a dedicated emergency AC repair page in all 3 answers.
- "Most trusted family-owned HVAC company in Austin": ChatGPT cited companies' About pages in all 3 answers. Gemini cited Best Pick Reports and Forbes's local HVAC list in 2 of 3 each.
- "Affordable AC installation Austin TX": both tools cited installation and pricing pages. ChatGPT also cited financing pages and Austin Energy's AC rebate page in 2 of 3 answers.
One company in our tests was named first in all 3 ChatGPT emergency answers but in none of Gemini's answers. The question asked, and the tool used, changed who got named.
What to do about it
- List the questions your customers ask, such as emergency, installation, maintenance, a brand you service or a neighborhood you cover.
- Build one page per question that answers it in the first two sentences. Learn what GEO means for home services.
- Keep directory profiles current for the broad "best" questions.
- Check more than one AI tool, several times each, before deciding where you stand.
FAQ
Is this the same as ranking in Google?
No, though they overlap. See AI search vs SEO for contractors.
How sure are these findings?
They come from 3 runs per question per tool on one day in one city. Gemini ran on its Flash-Lite model, and one of its installation answers was only partly captured. Treat them as patterns, not rules.
What should I fix first?
A clear page for your most profitable job, then the directory listings AI cites for "best" questions.
