Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?

Direct answer

Usually one of three things is going on: ChatGPT can't easily read your website, your business details are thin or inconsistent across the web, or other businesses show up more on the sites it trusts. Answers also change from run to run, so a single search doesn't tell you much.

Common causes

  1. Your site blocks or confuses crawlers. Check your robots.txt and any firewall settings. For example, Cloudflare's managed robots.txt, when it's turned on, blocks AI training crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. That doesn't block ChatGPT's search crawler, but it's worth knowing what your settings do.
  2. No clear answers on your pages. If your site doesn't plainly say what you do and where you work, AI tools lean on other sites to fill in the gaps.
  3. No business markup. Without schema, AI tools have to piece your details together from scattered pages.
  4. You're missing from directories it cites. In our Austin tests, ChatGPT cited contractor directories and review sites alongside business websites.
  5. Few or outdated reviews.

How to check where you stand

Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask, like "best plumber in [city]", several times in fresh chats, and note whether you're named. One run isn't enough, because the answers vary.

FAQ

I rank well on Google. Why not on ChatGPT?

Different systems use different sources. Ranking on Google helps but doesn't guarantee an AI mention.

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

There's no submission form for local recommendations. You improve the sources it reads.
