How do I get my home-service business recommended by ChatGPT?
Direct answer
ChatGPT and Gemini recommend the businesses they can find and confirm on the web. Usually that's through directories, review sites, license records and your own service pages. To be named, make sure the sources AI tools cite list you accurately, publish a clear page of your own for each job you want to be named for, and keep your details the same everywhere. In our Austin tests, the sources cited changed from trade to trade and question to question, so start by finding out which sources matter for your trade.
Why AI tools name some businesses and not others
When someone asks ChatGPT "who's the best roofer near me?", it often searches the web first and builds its answer from the pages it finds. In our tests, those pages were a mix of directories and review sites (like Angi, BBB and ConsumerAffairs), state license records, and businesses' own websites. If you're not on the pages it reads, or your details there don't match, you're unlikely to be named.
What we've seen in our tests
- Roofing (Austin, Nov 1, 2026): for "best roofer", Gemini cited GAF in 3 of 3 answers. For "family-owned", ChatGPT cited BBB profiles in 2 of 3 answers. See the roofing page
- Electricians (Austin, Nov 1, 2026): for panel upgrades, ChatGPT cited the Texas TDLR license search in 3 of 3 answers. See the electrician page
- Pest control and garage doors (Austin, Nov 3, 2026): for emergency and family-owned questions, Gemini cited only companies' own websites, so your own service pages matter most there.
Each test was 3 runs per question on one day, logged out, with Gemini on its Flash-Lite model. Answers vary from run to run and day to day.
What to do first
- Find out which directories the AI tools cite for your trade and city, and check that your listing on each one is complete and correct.
- Use the same business name, phone number, address and service area everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, directories and license record.
- Publish one page per service, such as emergency repair or a replacement, and answer the customer's question in the first paragraph.
- Say plainly if you're licensed, family-owned or available 24/7, and since when. AI tools pick up on these when people ask for them.
- Add business markup (structured data) and check that your robots.txt doesn't block AI crawlers.
- Re-check every month or so. AI answers change as the web changes.
FAQ
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
No. ChatGPT's recommendations aren't ads. They come from what it finds on the web.
How long does it take to start showing up?
We don't promise a timeline. Directory fixes and new pages need to be crawled before AI tools can use them, and results vary by trade and city.
Do I need a new website?
Usually not. Most of the work is clear service pages, accurate listings and consistent details.
Is ChatGPT the same as Gemini?
No. In our tests, they often cited different sources for the same question, so it's worth checking both.
